Feodosia has a truly remarkable history. It sits on the site of ancient
Theodosia, a settlement founded in the 6th century BC by Greek colonists. It
remained an important center of grain export for nearly a millennium until its
destruction at the hands of Hun invaders in the 4th century AD. At this point it
began a long period of transition between spheres of influence from both east
and west. Khazars, Kipchaks, Byzntine, Mongols, Genoese, Crimean Tatars, the
Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire all took their turn shaping the region's
history. Even Nazi Germany had their brief moment in time when they invaded and
occupied the city (1941-1944).
Today Feodosia is a popular Crimean sea and health resort. Local mineral springs, mud baths, and the areas favorable climate create ideal conditions for renowned sanatory (health resorts) that can be found throughout the region. Russians have been coming to this picturesque retreat for almost two centuries which is evident as you stroll down the city promenade that runs along the sea. Side by side stand beautiful 19th century estates and large Soviet rest homes. Those who stroll to the city's outskirts will be treated to the walls of a grand Genoese fortress and an early Armenian church that dates to the time of Byzantium.

Feodosia Money Museum
The Museum of Money in Feodosiya, opened in 2003, is a recent addition to the attractions of Feodosia. Even though it is relatviely new, it has already become well known far outside the city. From all the cities of the Ukraine only Feodosiya has twelve seperate periods of money issues. In addition, there has been coinage found in the vicinities of Feodosiya from various eras - from the ancient Greeks up to the White Guard. A mint existed in Feodosiya in the pre-Christian era, with the first currency appearing here in the days of the Bosporskogo empire. Then Feodosiya began to change the governors, to that of other strong powers. At this period were minted the Genoese coins, then those of the Crimean khans. The 18th century saw the commencement of the minting of coins of the Russian empire. |

Feodosia Hang Gliding Museum
The hang gliding museum is the first museum of its kind and is still the only one in Europe. An interesting fact from the history of the museum is that during the Soviet
period the city municipality tried to close down this museum because as they
said it wasn't making any money. But then they found some information that it
was the only museum of its type in the world. That is why they were afraid to
close down the museum. |

Alexander Green Museum
Alexander Green was one of the most famuos cult writers during the days of the USSR. His most known novel - " Scarlet Sails " was in those days found on the shelf of practically every bookworm in the nation. In all his works there is a certain unreality, an attempt if not to alter, then to create a world in which there is a place for pure emotions and feelings, without any of the impurities of cynicism or scepticism.
The main theme of all the books of Alexander Green was the sea. It is no wonder, that the writer decided to lodge in Feodosiya, as this Crimean city has both dramatic skylines of mountain ridges and a beautiful coastline. The writer moved to Crimea in 1924, and lived in a house along Galerejnoj street, which is now the museum.
The official opening of the museum took place in 1970. It is an attractive, small one-storeyed house. A huge, heavy anchor rests outside; the oak front door is similar to those of the ancient Dutch port taverns, and part of a ship's mast and a log lantern hang from the walls. |

Aivasovsky Gallery
Aivasovsky was born in 1817 in Feodosia - originally the Greek settlement of Theodosia - at the eastern end of the Crimean coast. He quickly developed an aptitude for music and art, but had no money for paper
and instead sketched in charcoal on the white walls of houses. By his late twenties Aivasovsky had already made his name as far as painting was concerned. Pope Gregory XVI bought his Chaos (the Creation of the World) for the Vatican museum. The English landscape painter Joseph Turner was so struck by his picture The Bay of Naples on a Moonlit Night that he wrote him a short poem in Italian praising its genius. When he was not yet 30 he returned to Russia to become a professor at the St Petersburg Academy, breaking his journey in Amsterdam to hold an exhibition and to be elected to the Amsterdam Academy too. |

Maximillian Voloshin Museum
Poet, philosopher and painter, Maximillian Voloshin (1877-1932) lived in Koktebel near Feodosia, permanently from 1916 until his death in 1932. His spiritual philosophy based on love for each unique individual led him to refuse to take sides during the Russian civil war of 1918–21, when he gave humanitarian assistance to both Red and White soldiers. He adopted Koktebel as his spiritual home and became widely respected as a man of wisdom and perception. Koktebel, in turn, adopted him, and when local people pointed out to him that the rocky profile of a bearded man, clearly visible on the nearby Kok-Kaya headland above the sea looked very like him, he saw it as a symbol of his identification with the area and referred to it in his poem “Koktebel.” After his death it became known as `Voloshin’s profile.”
